William became the first British athlete in history to make the podium in the Sri Chinmoy 6 Day road race held in Flushing Meadow Park, New York from April 22nd – 28th.

He covered a total of 461 miles to finish in 3rd place overall (1st in the 50-59 age group) from a field of 23 starters. The race was won by the Ukrainian Galya Balatskyy with 481 miles with the Finn, Asprihanal Aalto just 9 miles ahead of him.

Severe weather during the first two days meant that this wouldn’t be a record setting event, but a competitive race to the finish.

“Conditions were really brutal, especially in the first 48 hours and this made it one of the toughest multiday events I have ever done. It was also the most competitive, with 3 strong runners competing hard right to the end. I also had to put up with a sinus infection, which developed during the race and didn’t help.”

He was an unexpected leader during day two, before dropping to 2nd place where he remained, right up to the last day, when a revived Aalto, picked up his pace and passed him to take 2nd place close to the end of the race.

“Aalto took me a bit by surprise, as it is usually me that has the strong finish. I couldn’t respond and he was a worthy 2nd place finisher. We all pushed each other during those final hours, no one wanting to give an inch.”

William would like to thank his crewman Alan Young and blog master Shaun Brassfield-Thorpe from ULTRAFitnessTraining.com who updated his blog during the race.

He would also like to thank everybody for their messages of support which were much appreciated.

Orkney-based ultra marathon runner, William Sichel (58) competes for the first time in the 15th edition of the Sri Chinmoy non-stop 6 Day race, in New York’s Flushing Meadow Park, starting on Sunday April 22nd at 5pm UK time.

William remains unbeaten in 6 day races since his debut in Monaco in 2006. He’s since won further events in Monaco (2007), Hamm in Germany (2008) and Balaton in Hungary (2011). William has a current overall world ranking of No 2 in the 6 day event.

“I’ll certainly have my work cut-out in New York, as I’ll be up against previous New York winners Ashprihanal Aalto from Helsinki and Rimas Jakelaitis from Lithuania. ‘Round the World’ runner Jesper Olsen from Denmark, will also be putting in an appearance. I’m in good shape and I’m looking forward to a good, competitive race.”

A bumper capacity entry of 25 men and 13 women from 18 countries will battle it out over 144 hours, on a one mile circuit, close to the National Tennis Centre in Flushing, New York. A 10 day race also takes place concurrentlyat the same venue, finishing at the same time as, with the 6 day race.

The New York event has a long history and is one of the few events, nowadays, to rely on manual lap counters, who operate in 6 hour shifts, counting and time recording every runner’s laps as they pass by.

In May last year, William set a new overall British road record for the greatest distance run in 6 days, 518.34 miles. This was also a new World Age-Group record.

William is a member of the Orkney Athletic Club and is currently engaged in Project 60@60 in which he is attempting to have set 60 ultra distance records, at World, British and Scottish level, including age-groups, before his 60th birthday on October 1st 2013. Currently William has set 58 records, including 6 World Age-Group records.

2XU is pleased to announce a partnership with the new concept race rankings website RankMyTri.com.

RankMyTri offers the worlds first global triathlon rankings system that adjusts a competitors’ race time based on course difficulty and age.

Amateur and professional triathletes alike can upload their race times into the global rankings tables to uncover their ‘RankMyTri Time’ (adjusted race time). They can then compare their times against friends, club mates and the competition using their unique user profile, which is a showcase of all their races to date.

If you have entered a more difficult than average race then you may have inadvertently set a new personal best without even knowing it! At RankMyTri.com you can see which of your races resulted in a faster adjusted time and therefore can finally put to rest the argument about who out of your friends and club mates is the fastest or most improving!

RankmyTri.com is excited to partner up with 2XU as both brands share the same values and core belief. 2XU gives triathletes the edge that you need to break those hard worked for PB’s and RanMyTri offers the perfect platform to record your race times and to see how you improve over the seasons.

Mike Martin (Marketing Director 2XU UK) said “It is a pleasure to be working with the energetic and enthusiastic team such as the guys behind Rank My Tri. The site’s ethos of maximising your performance by trying to beat your PB mirrors our moto and belief : ‘human performance multiplied’.

March 20, 2012 – The 1996 Ironman World Championship presented some historic firsts: Luc Van Lierde became the first European champion, The Belgian set a world record that wasn’t matched until 2011. And more than 1,400 competitors were introduced to a powerful, brand-new boost of energy for their long day in Kona: a new product called “energy gel,” supplied by GU Energy Labs of Berkeley, California.

GU created the first energy gel in 1994, and its quick adoption by the toughest race on earth, began a long partnership between the two brands. Today, GU is enormously proud to announce that it is returning to Kona and beyond with a two-year agreement with Ironman to be the official on-course energy gel and energy chew supplier in the United States.

As the first gel sponsor of Ironman, GU is intimately familiar with the unique energy needs of Ironman athletes. Original GU Gel, Roctane Ultra Endurance Gels, and GU Chomps will be on course, offering Ironman athletes a spectrum of tasty, high-performance energy solutions with the aim of getting competitors to the finish faster — and feeling better.

“It’s like coming home,” said GU Energy president Brian Vaughan. “We have a historic tie to Ironman, and while our connection with Ironman athletes has never waned, we’re really pleased to be able to step up and serve in an official capacity as an event sponsor for these pinnacle events.”

The agreement covers US events — ten Ironman events — including the Ironman World Championship — as well as twenty-three Ironman 70.3 events, including the Ironman World Championship 70.3, and five 5150 Triathlon Series races.

“We are excited to welcome GU back to our family of partners,” said Erik Vervloet, Chief Marketing Officer of Ironman. “A large part of our success depends on strategic partnerships. The synergy between these two brands is evident. Neither will compromise when it comes to delivering what it takes to get competitors across the finish line. The team at GU shares our passion for providing the key elements an Ironman athlete needs to excel.”

Reflecting the rapid growth in triathlon overall, Ironman and its portfolio of brands have witnessed historic numbers in recent years. The inaugural Ironman U.S. Championship sold out in just over 11 minutes. Overall annual participation numbers for Ironman races now sit at more than 25,000 in the U.S. alone, up from mere hundreds in the 1970s. The annual number of participants in domestic Ironman 70.3 events is more than 50,000, while the 5150 Triathlon Series each year sees approximately 15,000 athletes across events in the U.S.
